Prudence can help lower expenditure

THE recent announcement on the increase in fuel prices will have a spiralling effect on the prices of all commodities and services.

The average Malaysian will surely feel the pinch, as the purchasing power of his salary has plummeted tremendously.

Every organisation and individual should play a part to reduce the burden of inflation. Everyone should practise prudent spending and avoid unnecessary expenditure.

Organisations like Tenaga Nasional, Telekom Malaysia, Bernas etc should refrain from printing expensive calendars and diaries.

Since Telekom Malaysia has been enjoying high profits during better times, is it now time for it to reduce telephone charges to help ease the burden faced by the public. I would suggest that it also forgo the monthly rental charges until the economy improves.

It is absurd that some companies pay their employees exorbitant bonuses. The Government should limit bonus payments to two months.

The money saved could be used to lower prices or provide better services. It can also be used for charitable purposes.

Some companies might be forced to retrench staff. The Government should keep a register of retrenched workers and help them seek re-employment.

Apart from the above, basic practises like saving electricity should be practised by all.
